Managing Domains

This guide covers creating, editing, and organizing data domains — including product assignment, steward management, and sub-domain hierarchies.

Creating a Domain

  1. Navigate to the Data Domains section from the organization menu
  2. Click New Domain
  3. Fill in the required fields:
    • Name — Business domain name (e.g., "Sales", "Finance")
    • Slug — URL-friendly identifier (e.g., sales, finance)
  4. Optionally set:
    • Description — Explain the domain's scope and purpose
    • Icon — Emoji or icon for visual identification
    • Owner — Primary accountable person (defaults to you)
    • Parent Domain — Nest under an existing domain for hierarchy
  5. Click Create

Editing a Domain

Open any domain from the domain list to view its detail page. You can update the name, description, icon, owner, or parent domain. Changes take effect immediately.

Deleting a Domain

Delete a domain from its detail page. This removes the domain and all product assignments and steward memberships. Products themselves are not deleted.

Assigning Products

Products from any space can be assigned to a domain. A product can belong to multiple domains.

  1. Open the domain detail page
  2. In the Products section, click Add Product
  3. Select the product from the picker
  4. The assignment is created immediately

To remove a product from the domain, click Remove next to the product in the list.

Managing Stewards

Stewards are team members who help manage the domain alongside the owner.

Adding a Steward

  1. Open the domain detail page
  2. In the Stewards section, click Add Steward
  3. Search for the user by name or email
  4. Select a role: owner or steward
  5. Click Add

Removing a Steward

Click the Remove button next to a steward's name. The domain owner cannot be removed — to change owners, assign a new owner first.

Sub-Domain Hierarchies

Domains can be organized into parent–child hierarchies for fine-grained structure.

Creating a Sub-Domain

When creating a domain, select an existing domain as the Parent Domain. This nests the new domain under the parent in the domain tree.

The domain tree view shows all domains in your organization with their hierarchical relationships. Use it to:

  • Visualize the organizational structure
  • Navigate between parent and child domains
  • Understand which products roll up under which business functions

Access Request Integration

Domain owners are automatically surfaced as suggested approvers when a user requests access to a product within the domain. This ensures access requests are routed to the people with business context about the data.
